ALARMING ECHO BEATS INTERVIEW WITH DCLXVI

"He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, freeman and slave, to receive a mark on (or in*) his right hand or on (or in*) his forehead, so that no-one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom, if anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a person and it's number is 666."
Rev 13:16-18
On that note let's take a little jounry into the mind of the creator of this digital noise project known as...DCLXVI !
Q: How long has DCLXVI been around?

A: The project began in 1998. I was starting to get into a lot of Mike Patton's experimental work, which really introduced me to noise in the first place. That led to becoming interested in noise groups such as Death Squad, Merzbow, Xome, Cock E.S.P., etc.

Q: How many members are in the band?

A: It's just me.

Q: Are you involved in side projects?

A: I'm currently working on an experimental project with Ccoa from South Africa and Matt Taggart (Pop Culture Rape Victim) called James Bondage. I'm also going to be working on a noise project with Matt Taggart called Girone Della Merda. I'm still looking for a vocalist for that one.

Q: Where did you get the name DCLXVI?

A: It’s named DCLXVI (the roman numerals for 666) because of my interests in Satanism (Anton LaVey's teachings) and various other occult subjects that I was into years ago. It’s also named that because of this country’s fascination with that number. It has become a thing to be superstitious about for some people.

Q: What influences DCLXVI?

A: A lot of the influences I have are from disturbing visual art, music, and movies that I enjoy. For instance, on my last album “FLESH” a big influence was the art of Asya Schween, who did the cover art.

Q: What types of music are your favorites? Bands and genres?

A: I enjoy noise (obviously), indie rock, experimental, international pop, etc. As far as specific bands/artists: Spookey Ruben, Xome, Stimbox, Pop Culture Rape Victim, Masonna, The Sugarcubes, Area, Can, Stereolab, Cocteau Twins, The Russian Futurists, Cornelius, Broadcast, The Flaming Lips, The Boredoms, various Mike Patton projects, Girls Are Short, etc.

Q: How old are you?

A: 23

Q: How many live shows have you played and with who?

A: I've played two live shows in Billings, Montana, and they were with artists such as: Xome, Stimbox, Pop Culture Rape Victim, DJ Spidermonkey, Empty, Minus, and Stowaway From The Mushroom Planet.

Q: What is the imagery you are trying to convey thru the media you have chosen?

A: I’m not really hoping to convey anything to people. I just use different ideas that interest me or various disturbingly beautiful dreams I’ve had. If people get it that’s great, if they don’t, oh well. Then again they can interpret it however they want.

Q: Are there any other bands around the scene there we should look out for?

A: Well, the only other noise artist in Montana is Pop Culture Rape Victim. If you haven't heard his stuff you must check it out. He really does amazing stuff. Another great band from Montana that is worth checking out is Loopian Zu.

Q: What can we expect from you next?

A: Well, I just put the wraps on a split with Pop Culture Rape Victim which will be out in March, and I’ve started working on a split with Ethelscull. After that I will finish up The Pi Project. I also have a "Recycled Music" tape coming out soon on RRRecords and a CD-R coming out on the Harsh Noise label. The very next release will be the Pop Culture Rape Victim split on Oubliette Records in March 2003.

Q: What is your political and religious beliefs?

A: I'm neither a Democrat nor am I Republican. They are just different sides of the same bullshit coin to me. They both have different interests and issues, but they obviously don't really give a shit about the American people. I don't really have a lot of interest in politics anyway. The corruption lies, and bullshit just depresses me. Plus, whenever I think about the current state of the world with the whole Iraq thing I feel helpless. A lot of American people are speaking out against this possible war, but they are clearly being ignored by both the media and the government. All the media really cares about is ratings and money. All the government cares about is money and power. It’s hard not to feel helpless when you are up against shit like that. As far as religion goes, I don't really have one. Religion isn't really a necessary thing for my life. For a lot of people it is. I like to keep an open-minded approach to everything. So I guess I have my own religion, which is to not believe. I think organized religion wipes out individuality in people and it gives them tunnel vision.

Q: What is your involvement in Oubliette Records?

A: Oubliette Records is basically a D.I.Y. label to release my own stuff instead of trying to get other labels to release it. I'd much rather release my own stuff anyway because I can make it look exactly the way I want it to.

Q: Are you involved with other labels?

A: I do have a couple older releases on Negatron Heavy Industries. I will also have a “Recycled Music” tape on RRRecords and a CD-R on the Harsh Noise label.

Q: What are your favorite books, movies,or TV shows?

A: I'm really into the writings of Kurt Vonnegut and Phillip K. Dick. I'm currently reading "House of Leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski and “The Sirens of Titan” by Kurt Vonnegut. My favorite movies are Gummo, Julien Donkey-Boy, Salo: 120 Days of Sodom, Bowling For Columbine, Donnie Darko, pretty much anything by Nick Zedd, pretty much anything by David Lynch, and pretty much anything by Stanley Kubrick. I don't watch much TV because I think a lot of the stuff they are trying to shove down people’s throats is just ridiculous. Example: Reality TV

Q: Anything you want to add?

A: Thanks for your interest in DCLXVI and my other projects and thanks also for the interview!
